The fourth ALFA (African Livestock Trade Fair) took place at the Afridome Showgrounds in Parys from 17 to 19 September. This trade expo with its focus on livestock, attracted people from far and wide, with farmers from all over South Africa attending.
The Hinterland National Interbreed Beef Cattle Championship which took place at the expo on Thursday, 19 September, was definitely the highlight of ALFA’s interbreed focus and the ALFA programme as a whole.
Some of the largest cattle shows in the country’s interbreed champions were brought together here in order to crown the national male and female interbreed champions.
This year’s qualifiers were of a very high standard and were arguably some of the best genetics ever exhibited under one roof in South Africa.
Piet and Hendrik Delport from Migdol were crowned winners with their beautiful red Angus cow, Hide-A-Ways Serenade, who walked away with the title of Hinterland National Interbreed Champion Beef Cow for 2019.
“It’s an incredible advertisement for Hide-A-Ways and one can hardly describe its value for our stud. Let’s build on this. I hope we’ll be standing here again next year,” said Hendrik Delport after their cow was crowned as champion.
A Santa Gertrudis bull, Kanonkop, belonging to Riaan Lubbe from Potgietersrus, was announced as this year’s Hinterland National Interbreed Champion Beef Bull.
“I knew we had a beautiful bull, but in a competition such as the Hinterland National Interbreed Beef Cattle Championship, there are a lot of goodbulls and the competition is strong. We are extremely proud. Thank you to Hinterland. It’s really a great honour to be here,” says Riaan Lubbe.
