South African singer/songwriter and musician, Connell Cruise, has renewed his recording contract with David Gresham Records and will release a new album this summer. The currently untitled album will feature all-new original music written by Cruise.
Over the past year, international audiences have been introduced to Cruise’s music through major synchronisation placements — “Into the Wild” in LAIKA studio’s official trailer for their animated feature film, Missing Link, which starred Hollywood greats Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, and Zach Galifianakis, and “Endless Possibilities” in Pepsi Co.’s television commercial for Quaker Oats, which was broadcast across North America.
“The synergy between the team at David Gresham Records and myself have always made magic for me,” says Cruise. “Throughout my career, I’ve seen a side of this industry that not many get to see. I’ve toured the world and I’ve been lucky enough to create music with industry heavyweights from around the globe. What I’ve come to realise, especially in the past year, is that there is nothing more important than the people you surround yourself with. I want to keep releasing great music and I couldn’t think of a better team to do that with than Andrew and the folks at DGR.”
David Gresham Records is also excited to collaborate with Cruise.
Andrew Mitchley, C.O.O, and Head of A&R commented, “David Gresham Records is thrilled to have Connell back in the studio. We have enjoyed some incredible success together, and after hearing Connell’s new music, we are more excited than ever to be working with this great talent.”
After the release of his third album, “Barely Breathing,” in 2017, Cruise showed the country a new set of skills by competing in, and ultimately winning, the debut season of M-NET’s Dancing with the Stars South Africa.
Cruise has also spent much of the past year focusing on his family. He and his wife, Sarah, welcomed their first child in December 2018.
About Connell Cruise
Connell Cruise’s rise in the music industry can only be described as meteoric. After being discovered locally by David Gresham Records, he released his South African debut album in 2013 and subsequently received three South African Music Award (SAMA) nominations. In April 2014, a social media frenzy surrounding the iTunes release of his single, “Into the Wild,” grabbed the attention of music industry titan, L.A. Reid. Cruise’s subsequent deal with Island Records in New York City is considered the largest and most significant record deal in South African music history, introducing him to the international music scene and trailblazing the way for a new wave of South African talent.
Cruise, who was born in Johannesburg, comes from a very musical family. His unique background has helped his music evolve into a fresh, multi-faceted pop sound. With infectious instrumental riffs and accessible lyrics that highlight his tracks’ pop sensibility, Cruise seamlessly incorporates the nuances of the genres he grew up loving with the rhythms and sounds essential to South Africa’s rich musical heritage. His songs are catchy but also memorable on a deeper level — the level of a storyteller expertly and intricately weaving life experience into his music and lyrics.
Cruise has toured extensively across both North America and South Africa. He has performed for crowds of tens of thousands at festivals such as Bonnaroo and Firefly and iconic venues such as the Troubadour, The Highline Ballroom and Mercury Lounge. Cruise has shared the stage with a wide array of musical greats, notably Harry Belafonte, Adam Lambert, The Fray, SafetySuit, and American Authors. Most recently, he opened the 25th SAMA’s with a performance of his radio hit, “All Day.”
Cruise’s skill as a songwriter has earned him the opportunity to collaborate with international hit-makers such as Ido Zmishlany and Daniel Kyriakides of Shawn Mendes fame, Scott Harris, composer for the Chainsmokers, John Ryan, One Direction hit maker, Teddy Geiger, fellow singer-songwriter, and James Shelley, lead guitarist for the American Authors.
Cruise has enjoyed tremendous songwriting success with his prolific body of work spanning four albums, three EPs, and 14 radio hit singles.
